Reading Passage I
Over the last fifty decades, the Western media had associated Ethiopia with images of war, disease and mass starvation due to man-made and natural disasters. And yet, Ethiopia's history and culture are far greater than the sum total of such tragic events.
Some of these enduring legacies are its literary traditions, religious, antiquity and political sovereignty.
Firstly, unlike many other African countries, Ethiopia has not only its own alphabet but it also has a rich literary tradition including translations from ancient Greek, Arabic and Coptic sources into indigenous languages. Secondly, the Ethiopian multi-cultural identity is intertwined with a uniquely African Christianity that traces its ancestry directly to pre-colonial traditions, rather than arriving via Europe.
